“The purpose of the Intergroup is to facilitate unity and cooperation among groups of Alcoholics Anonymous in the greater Louisville area, along with other service committees in carrying the AA message to the still-suffering alcoholics. One of the primary vehicles for carrying the message is our Central Office, which is managed by THE GROUPS through the Intergroup Board of Directors”.

• The Greater Louisville Intergroup (GLI) consists of Intergroup Representatives, (IGRs) from each of the local home groups, a Chairperson, Cochairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, and Central Office Manager. It “evolved” from the “Steering Committee”, which began after Bill W’s visit to Louisville in 1943.

• The 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous guides the Intergroup in all its affairs.

• The Intergroup is organized into Standing Committees, to handle all the work needed to reach the still suffering alcoholic. Each Standing Committee has a standing committee chair.

AA has grown over 9 decades on the principle that when members get active in carrying the message to other alcoholics, everyone wins.

Alcoholics Anonymous encourages people to look for service opportunities; either within the home group or outside of the Home Group as they complete the 12 steps.

In addition to the opportunity to serve as the IGR or Alternate IGR for your Home Group, there are a number of Pamphlets and Manuals that describe each Committee and what that Committee does, and what the Committee Members do.

The IGR Board of Directors, and the group vote of the over 100 IGRs, offers a NEW IGR initiative for 2025, entitled SCAN ME!. It has created new printed materials with quick links to attract and invite MORE NEW AAs to get involved.

SCAN ME! HAS THREE GOALS

1. To determine why some Home Groups do NOT have an IGR, and educate these and ALL Home Groups, about all the services and “assets” that the Intergroup and Central Office provide.

2. To educate people in all Home Groups of the importance of service work in staying sober, and present and explain service opportunities, based on individual preferences and talents. Present opportunities on Committees, volunteer work at the Central Office, and more.

3. To offer a quick, safe and convenient way for AA members to donate support to the Intergroup and its Central Office AND/OR their Home Group electronically. This is especially important in this era, when more and more people carry less cash and pay electronically; eg. Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle & Venmo, etc.

HISTORY OF THE LOUISVILLE INTERGROUP

The Greater Louisville Intergroup Inc. started in 1943, as explained by a 1953 article in a local AA publication called the Gateway:

“Bill W’s visit to Louisville in March, 1943, sparked a real growth of AA locally. Neighborhood groups were formed for a second meeting each week. A steering committee composed of representatives from each group, was set up to serve as an advisory body. This committee continues to function through monthly meetings. It’s <sic> purpose is to discuss, coordinate, and assist in cooperation among the groups and their various projects; to direct the functions of the Central Office, and to assist generally in the development of the fellowship in the Louisville area.”

The Gateway, March1958 reprint of the May 1953 article AA Begins in Louisville in 1941.

This organization, originally called the “steering committee,” was renamed the “Intergroup” in 1970 to conform to AA terminology.

November 5, 1970:
Report to the Steering Committee of Alcoholics Anonymous, Greater Louisville Intergroup, by the sub-committee appointed October 2, 1970. This sub-committee was appointed by the Chairman acting upon a motion made and carried, to investigate and make suggestions for expounding and updating the efficiency of the Steering Committee. It has become evident by the lack of attendance by delegates and interest by the groups that this action be taken.

The suggestion of this sub-committee are as follows:

1. NAME: Change the name from Steering Committee to conform to terminology as know by General Service.

2. REPRESENTATION: One elected representative from each Home Group, known as Inter Group Representative (IGR)….
